Several agencies have begun to ramp up preparations for their workforces ahead of a potential COVID-19 outbreak in their regions. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will conduct a telework test exercise on Thursday as part of its ongoing preparations for potential coronavirus developments, the agency said Monday. “Participation in this exercise is voluntary and optional but strongly encouraged provided that you have consulted with your supervisor and are able to continue work on organizational priorities and mission-essential operations while teleworking,” Benjamin Friedman, NOAA’s deputy undersecretary for operations, said Monday in an email to employees, which Federal News Network obtained. The exercise will test NOAA’s capabilities, resources and preparedness for “large-scale teleworking.” It applies to all NOAA employees and contractors at the agency’s offices in Silver Spring and Germantown, Maryland, and its offices in the Herbert C. Hoover Building in Washington, D.C.         Insight by Oracle and Intel: ...

Rammstein’s Till Lindemann Tests Negative for Coronavirus

It was originally reported by German tabloid Bild that Rammstein vocalist Till Lindemann had tested positive for coronavirus and was in intensive care. Hours after the news spread, Rammstein finally released a statement claiming Lindemann has tested negative for the virus. The German news source reported earlier today (March 27) that the Rammstein frontman contracted coronavirus shortly after performing in Moscow with his other project, Lindemann, on March 15. On his return to Berlin, he was reportedly brought to hospital by emergency medics with an extremely high fever and diagnosed with pneumonia. We reached out to Rammstein’s team for confirmation or additional information on Lindemann’s condition, but received no response. Now, the band has issues an official statement: Yesterday evening Till Lindemann was admitted to a hospital on the band’s doctor’s advice. He spent the night in intensive care but has been moved as he is feeling better. Till has tested negative for the coronavirus. Fellow metal musicians who have contracted, or have likely contracted, coronavirus include Testament’s Chuck Billy, Exodus’ Gary Holt, Death Angel’s Will Carroll, Crown the Empire’s Brandon Hoov...

A novel ternary heterostructure with dramatic SERS activity for evaluation of PD-L1 expression at the single-cell level

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) probes based on a charge transfer (CT) process with high stability and reproducibility are powerful tools under open-air conditions. However, the key problem ahead of practical usage of CT-based SERS technology is how to effectively improve sensitivity. Here, a novel ternary heterostructure SERS substrate, Fe3O4@GO@TiO2, with a significant enhancement factor of 8.08 × 106 was first synthesized. We found the remarkable enhanced effect of SERS signal to be attributed to the resonance effect of CuPc, CT between GO and TiO2, and enrichment from a porous TiO2 shell. In addition, we developed a robust SERS probe with good recyclability under visible light illumination on Fe3O4@GO@TiO2 nanocomposites toward ultrasensitive detection of cancer cells down to three cells. We have now successfully applied this probe for in situ quantification and imaging of programmed cell death receptor ligand 1 (PD-L1) on triple-negative breast cancer cell surface at the single-cell level and for monitoring the expression variation of PD-L1 during drug treatment. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been a promising analytical technique for the detection of...

Animal Rescue Group Asks For Old Bra Hooks to Help Injured Turtles

Carolina Waterfowl Rescue, an animal rescue group based out of Charlotte, North Carolina, raised a stir online after putting out a request on social media this week for discarded bras. “To all our bra wearing friends! When you discard one you no longer want please remove the eye closures from the fasteners for us! We use them to mend our turtle shells!” they wrote on Facebook, clarifying that they needed both sides of the closure. The nonprofit shared in the post that they got the idea from the Wildthunder Wildlife & Animal Rehabilitation in Independence, Iowa, which had previously posted on Facebook about how they use bra clasps and zip ties to help repair cracks in turtle shells. In an interview with WBTV, Keevan Freitas of the Carolina Waterfowl Rescue, explained that they use glue, tape, wire and bra clasps to help bind together broken parts of a turtle’s shell. “It acts like a little fixator, it’s the eyelets that we need,” Freitas told the outlet, adding that they “basically wire the shell together.” When it’s time for the turtle to be released back into the wild, the glue holding everything together gets worn down, which allows the clasps to be easily removed. “You c...

Linux-powered NVR can stream and analyze 12 HD cam feeds without a cloud connection

YPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”> [Updated: 3:45PM] — A new “Camect” camera hub and 1TB NVR that can aggregate up to 12 HD streams has funded on Indiegogo. The $279 device runs Linux on an Apollo Lake SoC and provides AI algorithms to analyze video without a cloud service. A Mountain View-based startup called Camect has successfully launched an Apollo Lake-based, AI-enabled camera hub and network video recorder for analyzing surveillance feeds. After more than quintupling its $50K Indiegogo goal, the Camect is available for another 15 days in $279 early bird packages, down from the eventual $399 when it ships in January. The Camect supports up to 24-megapixels of total streaming video, which translates into 12 HD cameras, 24 720p cameras, 3x 4K cameras, or a mixture in between. Pan/tilt/zoom support and automatic configuration are available for selected cameras. As noted in the CNXSoft report that alerted us to the product, the Camect hardware is based on an AcePC AK1 mini-PC that appears to have been phased out for a similarly Windows-equipped, $190 AK2 model. Note,...
